Vijay Diwas is commemorated every year on December 16 and it marks the day military turned victorious against Pakistan in the 1971 war for the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

Major Akshay Girish Kumar was a soldier with the 51 Engineer Regiment of the Bengal Sappers. He Kumar is survived by his wife and parents who live in Bengaluru. His father Girish Kumar retired as a Wing Commander. His grandfather retired as a Colonel from the Indian Army.

Meghana Girish, his mother Tweeted: Tomorrow, 16th Dec, Vijay Diwas of 1971 War, a road in Bengaluru is being named to honour Major Akshay Girish. In 2000, wrote what I had felt as a child on a war my father had fought and survived. Then Akshay was a Georgian in class 8. Strange connections continue from the stars.

Just three days ago, Meghana Girish had expressed doubts about the promise being fulfilled by the Karnataka civic authority. This is what she had written on her Twitter page:

Major Akshay Girish did not once step back from leading to defend his country and saving precious lives. But promises made to honour the brave heart have not been fulfilled. Still waiting for the road naming. Will it happen by 16th Dec?

BBMP did fulfil its promise and named the road in Yelahanka as Major Akshay Girish Kumar Road in the presence of his family.
