Many fans and followers, including celebrities and politicians, visited the place where DMK patriarch Karunanidhi was laid to rest in Chennai. Late sandalwood smuggler Veerappan had kidnapped Kannada superstar Rajkumar in 2000. Karunanidhi was the CM of Tamil Nadu then and SM Krishna the CM of Karnataka. Veerappan's wife Muthulakshmi, who paid tribute to the Kalaignar's memorial at Marina beach, said that Karunanidhi's speech drove Veerappan to release Rajkumar.
