Uttarakhand: Earthquake of magnitude 5.0 hits Pithoragarh district

Dharchula: An earthquake with magnitude 5.0 jolted Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district on Sunday. 

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the tremors was in Nepal — a few kilometers away from a town called Dharchula.

The earthquake was felt at around 12:30 pm. If reports are to be believed, the quake was so strong that things fell inside houses at Dharchula and Askot. 

Residents also rushed out of their houses. 

However, no loss of life or damage to property had been reported as of yet. 

Recently, a study found that a coupled locked fault in the 250 sq km in the Garhwal Kumaon Segment. When a locked fault is formed it is slowly loaded by tectonic forces and elastic strain is gradually accumulated.
