The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Hoda Muthana who left America in 2014 to marry an ISIS fighter was not a US citizen and is banned from returning to the country
The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo in a firm announcement said that Hoda Muthana, a woman who left America four years ago to join the Islamic State will not be allowed to return to the country.
Hoda Muthana who is now a widow and lives in a refugee camp left America in 2014 to marry an ISIS fighter in Syria. In an interview with The Guardian Muthana had stated that she deeply regretted her decision and also asked if she could go back and be tried under the American judicial system. But Pompe said on Tuesday said that Muthana is not a US citizen and will not be allowed in the country.
In an official statement, Pompeo said that Muthana had no legal basis to enter the United States, no valid US passport, no right to a passport or any visa. The statement also advised US citizens to not travel to Syria.
US departments obviously deems any association with terrorists as threat to national security. With increased rise in terrorism in countries across the world, especially with the recent terror attack in India, countries are on high alert.
Reportedly, Muthana’s lawyer contested that that she was born in the United States and was a student in Alabama when she flew to the Middle East.
Muthana had told her parents that she was going on a school trip but instead married an ISIS fighter. A regretful Muthana who now has a son told The Guardian that she has ruined both their futures.
She is now stationed in a refugee camp in northern Syria where she is reportedly, the sole American.
In a similar incident on Tuesday, the UK government revoked the citizenship of a British woman who married an ISIS member and wanted to return to the country.
