The Union government had passed an ordinance declaring triple talaq as a criminal offence. Muslim groups representing different sects urged the government to safeguard their freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution.
After All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) criticised the ordinance, which was passed by the central government last week on triple talaq, several Muslim organisations have come together to demand a withdrawal of it. The central government has termed triple talaq as a criminal offence. Muslim groups representing different sects urged the government to safeguard the freedom ensured in the constitution for the community.
A resolution was passed at a public meeting in Hyderabad, organised by the mother group of different Muslim organisations, United Muslim Forum (UMF). The resolution was passed to condemn the ordinance on triple talaq. It also said that the ordinance was passed through the backdoor.
"The present government seems to be conspiring to take away the religious identity of Muslims. When it failed to get the triple talaq bill passed in the Parliament, the government has chosen to get an ordinance promulgated in an undemocratic manner," the resolution said.
Hyderabad MP and also AIMIM chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, who was addressing the public meeting at MIM headquarters Darussalam, demanded that Muslims should be allowed to practice their religion without any bar. "When homosexuals have been given choice and married men and women also are given freedom to indulge in adultery without the fear of being punished by law, why are Muslims being denied freedom to practice their religion," he asked.
