Eyewitness accounts suggest the stampede took place due to confusion among the passengers of two different trains that reached the second and third platforms simultaneously. The already overcrowded foot-over bridge witnessed a sudden rush of footfalls to catch the two trains.

During the stampede, many were seriously injured. At least one man in his 40s has been critically wounded. Eyewitnesses say that the count of those injured could rise to at least 40. All the injured people were rushed to the nearest Howrah district hospital.
