The AIADMK minister tried to escape on a bike, but the people confronted him again in Nagapattinam, claiming that they had not received adequate relief material
Nagapattinam: On Monday, Tamil Nadu minister OS Manian’s convoy was attacked by angry villagers as he was on a visit to evaluate the condition of the region after the cyclonic storm Gaja hit the southern state recently.
According to reports, OS Manian was encompassed by the angry villagers, who raised their voice against Manian to leave the site claiming that they did not receive adequate relief materials. The minister also tried to escape on a bike, and the people again confronted him. He was later taken by the police officials in their vehicle securely.
On November 15, Cyclone Gaja crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam and unleashed massive destruction in Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts.
On November 18, Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami said that the death toll due to Cyclone Gaja had touched 45. The state government has announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. That apart, Rs 1 lakh would be provided to those with severe injuries and Rs 25,000 would be provided to those whose injuries are not serious.
Palaniswami also said that around 1.7 lakh trees were uprooted, 735 cattle died, 1.17 lakh houses damaged and 88,102-hectare agricultural land has been affected in coastal districts due to the storm.
Nearly 2.50 lakh people were provided with accommodation in 483 relief camps. Besides, 1,014 mobile medical vans have been set up, and so far one lakh people in affected areas have benefited from it, the chief minister said.
