Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea and her husband Peter Mukerjea were awarded jail terms by a Mumbai court on Tuesday for their roles in the murder of their daughter Sheena Bora.

The couple also filed for divorce in the Bandra family court. On April, Indrani had served Peter a legal notice for divorce on the ground that their 16-year-long marriage had “irretrievably broken down”.

Speaking to the media over the matter, Peter's lawyer Sushmita Nair said, "They (Indrani and Peter) were sent for counseling today. At the final day of the divorce (hearing), they might again be counselled on the orders of the court."

The lawyer further informed that all the immovable properties, financial settlements and personal belongings such as jewellery, furniture, paintings, watches, etc will be divided between the two after mutual consent.

Sheena was abducted and killed in April 2012 by Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai over a financial dispute. They later dumped her body in a forest.

In 2015, Indrani was arrested by the Mumbai Police and as the investigation progressed, police arrested and charged former INX Media chief Peter with murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
