Legislation on Ram temple cannot precede SC verdict, says PM Modi; RSS hails comment, VHP unimpressed

This was the first time the Prime Minister gave a glimpse of what his government is thinking about Ram Temple, an issue on which the RSS, its ideological mentor, had already warned the government - suggesting that the patience of cadres are running out

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cleared the air on what he wishes to do as far as the demand for an ordinance on Ram Temple is concerned. PM Modi said, "Let the judicial process be over. After the judicial process is over, whatever will be our responsibility as the government, we are ready to make all efforts."

What PM Modi meant

A) No ordinance route before the apex court takes a decision

B) His government isn't closed to the idea of an ordinance, but it will be explored only after the Supreme Court verdict on the matter is pronounced

C) His government wishes the Ram temple to be built at the disputed site of Ayodhya but within the ambit of the Constitution

On Tuesday, PM Modi said that even the triple talaq ordinance was brought in only after the judicial process was over.

This was the first time the Prime Minister gave a glimpse of what his government is thinking about Ram Temple, an issue on which the RSS, its ideological mentor, had already warned the government - suggesting that the patience of cadres are running out.

But on Tuesday, the RSS welcomed PM Modi's take on the Ram temple issue. The Sangh, in a statement, said that it is in line with the BJP's resolution that was made almost three decades ago. The RSS, however, reminded the Modi government that the people of India expect his government to honour its promise of building the temple within its tenure. The RSS termed PM Modi's remarks a "positive step" for saying "We (government) are ready to make all efforts."

The Ayodhya title suit is pending in the Supreme Court, which will be heard on January 4, when the apex court will decide when the hearing will begin and whether it should be heard on an urgent basis.

The RSS, in a carefully crafted statement said, "Even in the 2014 election manifesto prepared under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, the BJP promised to explore all possibilities within the framework of the Constitution to facilitate the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya."

We feel that the statement by Prime Minister is a positive step in the direction of Temple Construction. The Prime Minister reiterating the resolve to construct a grand Sri Ram Temple in Ayodhya in his interview is in tune with the resolution passed by BJP at Palampur in 1989.

In this resolution the BJP had stated that they would try to construct the grand Sri Ram Temple at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya through mutual dialogue between the two communities or by enabling required legislation.

Even in the 2014 Election Manifesto prepared under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, the BJP promised to explore all possibilities within the framework of the Constitution to facilitate the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The people of Bharat have reposed complete confidence and gave BJP the full mandate. The people of Bharat expect this government to fulfil the same promise during this tenure.

But on Wednesday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) issued a statement where it didn't sound as positive as the RSS, about the PM's promise about Ram temple. In a curt statement, the VHP's international working president Alok Kumar said that the Hindus can't wait forever for a court decision on the Ram temple. Kumar, an advocate by profession, demanded legislation on the issue. "The only appropriate way forward is to enact legislation, clearing the way for the construction of a grand Ram temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi now", the VHP said in a firm stand that has been consistent on its part.
