Unexploded shell bursts in Jammu: One killed, six injured

Several incidents of people losing their lives when exposed to unexploded ordnance in Jammu & Kashmir have occurred in the past

One man was killed while six others received critical injuries after an unexploded shell went off in the Jabowal village of Arnia sector. “The live shell exploded when a person working there accidentally pressed upon the unexploded shell around 100 m away from the fence. The person who landed on the unexploded shell received serious injuries whereas his brother lost his life. Five other persons received minor injuries. The injured have been referred to GMC for further treatment,” said SP RC Kotwal.

"One person is reported dead and 6 injured, natives of Bihar , (sic) in Village Jabowal of Arnia Sector because of explosion of already lying unexploded shell. @JmuKmrPolice will be investigating (sic). The injured are nursing their injuries in GMC Jammu." tweeted ADC Jammu Arun Manhas.

The man who lost his life has been identified as Bittu, a resident of Relia Bihar, whereas Babu Lal, Kircha Nand, Mukesh Kumar, Pardeep Kumar, Bachan Lal and Chandan Lal of Relia Bihar received injuries in this explosion.

Past incidents

On June 3, 2009, two scrap dealers were killed when an explosive device went off in the Budgam district. Abdul Salam Tantray and Muhammad Yousuf Malik were killed on spot when they touched the device at village Shinglipora.

On August 11, 2009, a shepherd lost his left leg in a powerful mine explosion after he accidentally stepped on it while grazing his cattle at Dalhan area near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch.

On January 16, 2010, Tufail Ahmad, 12, son of Muhammad Iqbal of Mohalla Chadyal died on the spot when an explosive device burst at Mohalla Chandyal in Sangoit area of Mendhar. The police said some children while playing in the field spotted a ball-like device and started fiddling with it. It exploded in the hands of the boy resulting in his spot death.

On May 2, 2010, two children injured when an explosive device exploded in a field in village Dhar Dachnan in Doda. The police identified them as RehanLatief, 3, and BurhanLatief, 9.

On June 27, 2010, two minors were injured in Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district while fiddling with an explosive object in their orchard. They were identified as Muhammad Saleem Pandit, 10, and Adil Ahmad Pandit, 8.

On July 27, 2010, 16-year-old girl Zahida Kousar got injured in a landmine explosion along the Line of Control in the Mendhar Tehsil of Poonch district of Jammu.

On October 14, 2010, a shepherd was injured in an explosion in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch. Sadakat Hussain, 23, of Mohalla Sar in Surthoti village of Gursai tehsil Mendhar was critically injured when his cattle inadvertently stepped over a Chinese grenade while grazing cattle.

On December 11, 2010, A minor died and another sustains injuries while fiddling with a live grenade at a firing range in Berda village in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch. Brothers Iftikar Ahmed and Shaukat Hussain had gone to the firing range to collect scrap. While Iftikar died on the spot, Hussain was injured when the grenade went off.
