Terrorists on Tuesday attacked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Batmaloo at the heart of Srinagar, killing one of the jawans and injuring two others.

According to a police official, the terrorists targeted a 23 Bn CRPF party in a busy market near the civil secretariat and the state police chief’s office in Srinagar. They fired many shots before fleeing from the scene.

“In the incident, a CRPF trooper, constable Shankar Lal, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the police hospital where he succumbed to injuries,” he said.

"Constable Shankar Lal has been martyred, while two others have been injured in the attack, and a manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers,” said CRPF spokesman Sanjeev Sharma.

On 15 June, terrorists had attacked a police party near the SMHS hospital in the Karan Nagar area of the city, leaving two police personnel injured. One of the injured policemen succumbed to his injuries.

Tuesday's attack has sparked concern among the security establishment at a time when infiltration from across the line of control is rising and intelligence inputs suggesting more local youths being absorbed by terror groups.

According to intelligence reports, around four-to-six armed terrorists are still hiding in Srinagar and are planing attacks on forces.

Sources said that nearly five youths from Srinagar itself are believed to have joined the terror groups and are acting as sleeper cells in the City.

Meanwhile, terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen had claimed the responsibility for the attack through a local news agency in Srinagar.
