OM George, rape accused Kerala Congress leader, surrenders

A case under sections of the POCSO Act was registered against Congress leader OM George. He is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, belonging to the Adivasi group.

Wayanad: Veteran Congress leader OM George surrendered before Manandavady's deputy superintendent of police Kuberan Namboothiri. He is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old Adivasi girl several times for over two years. It is also reported that the girl and her parents worked as servants at George’s house.

A case under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against district Congress committee (DCC) member OM George. And he is currently the vice-chairman of Sulthan Bathery Cooperative Bank.

The incident of rape came to light when the (victim) tried to commit suicide. Childline activists ensured that the victim was protected and informed the police immediately. 

The victim's relatives also alleged that the police didn't show any interest in arresting the aides, who tried to settle the case by way of bribe. Furthermore, they alleged that the police never bothered to question the victim.

Meanwhile, on February 4, the victim’s mother told media that she is planning to stage a hunger strike in front of the police station to protest the "inaction and disinterest of the police in daughter’s assault case". 

After this incident, George reportedly surrendered before the cops. 

DCC president of the Sulthan Bathery constituency said strict action would be taken against George if he is found guilty.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran has said to the media that George has been suspended from the party.
