On August 20, 2011, Lt Navdeep Singh, who was the Ghatak (commando) platoon commander of 15 Maratha Light Infantry, was deployed along the Line of Control in Gurez sector of Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir.
The officer laid an ambush after receiving information about the infiltration of terrorists. As expected, the terrorists walked into their trap and the young officer managed to kill three of them in no time.
As the encounter progressed, Navdeep tried to change his position but was shot in his arm. However, before laying down his life, he managed to eliminate the fourth terrorist as well.
He also helped in saving the life of one of his troop members in the encounter.
For his gallantry against the enemy, Navdeep was awarded the highest peacetime gallantry award Ashoka Chakra (Posthumous).
