Prime Minister Modi lit the eternal flame and inaugurated the National War Memorial at the India Gate. While attacking the Gandhi family, Modi spoke of the government's efforts in making the Army self-reliant.

New Delhi: Hitting out at the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that for some people, their own family interests are bigger than the nation. Modi, while inaugurating the National War Memorial, said that the Congress played with the lives of the armed forces when the party was in power.

Attacking the Gandhi family, PM Modi said, "From Bofors to helicopter ( AgustaWestland scam) deal, all the investigations are pointing to one family. It says a lot. Now, these people are putting all the efforts to make sure that Rafale aircraft doesn't land in the country."

Modi asked the gathering at the inauguration ceremony what was more important for them -- India or family, citing it was always "family" for the grand old party. “From stadium to hospitals, from schools to roads, everything was named after one family,” he said.

PM Modi also blamed the Congress for the several failures of the defence sector of the nation. No bulletproof jackets were bought between 2009-2014 when Congress was in power. “It is our government that has bought more than 2,30,000 bulletproof jackets for the forces. The earlier government used defence forces for profiteering, corruption,” Modi said.

Modi further added that his government is continuously working towards making the Army self-reliant. The decisions which were thought to be impossible earlier have now been made possible, he said.

“We have given the chance to women to join the defence services. We have taken the decision to give permanent commission to women employed in the defence services, making them at par with their male colleagues,” he said.

Keeping in mind the security forces, Modi said, soldiers on LoC areas if injured or killed in natural calamities like avalanche will be eligible for pensions. Three super speciality hospitals will be made for the armed forces.
