India has a new reason to rejoice. Four schoolchildren from the country won gold and silver medals at the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).
Vadodara’s Dhyey Sankalp Gandhi and Jishnu Basavaraju from Hyderabad won gold medals while Delhi’s Sanchit Agarwal and Aayush Kadam from Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, won silver.
The Chemistry Olympiad was held in Czech Republic’s capital city Prague and also in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, from July 19 to 29.
With this win, the tally of medals for India in the Olympiad stands at 80.
This is the 20th time India is participating in the Olympiad. The participants were given both theoretical and experimental problems to solve.
There are three stages of selection for the International Chemistry Olympiad. 56,000 students gave a written exam in Chemistry this year in the first stage.
The next two stages were held at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). The top 35 were selected and went through a 10-day orientation and selection process in Mumbai.
