The 3.27-carat diamond was recovered in Mumbai after it was smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates inside the stomach of the Chinese woman

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police arrested a Chinese couple after the woman was detected with a diamond worth nearly Rs 60 lakh inside her stomach.

The Chinese couple had stolen the piece of diamond from a shop in Dubai and the woman had consumed it. It was a 3.27-carat diamond, reported Gulf News. The X-ray scan displayed the diamond inside the woman's stomach. A doctor was called in to extract the diamond safely, stated the report.

The Chinese couple in their 40s stole the diamond from a commercial business district in Dubai, Deira's Gold Souk. Soon, the couple left for Mumbai from Dubai.

The couple was on their way to Hong Kong. However, after they were caught, the Indian police and Interpol sent them back to UAE.

The couple is said to have confessed to the crime.

Curiously, the couple had been caught on CCTV camera installed in the Gold Souk branch. The video showed the couple entering the place and the man distracting the staff while the woman was seen opening the display and stealing the diamond. However, no action was taken against the thieves on the spot.
