Mumbai: Four people have been killed and 12 others injured after an inferno engulfed the 12th floor of a high-rise building in Mumbai's commercial Parel area.

The fire brigade control room was alerted at around 8.32 am and 12 fire engines rushed to the spot. After two hours, the flames were eventually doused.

Dozens of people were rescued from the 17-story Crystal Tower building and the fire has been classified as Level-2.  The victims were rushed to the nearby hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

The blaze and the smoke spread quickly and trapped some residents in a staircase, said fire services chief PS Rahangdale.

Two firefighters were also injured in the firefighting operation.

Though the cause of fire is still under investigation, Rahangdale said it might be because of some fault in the electrical wiring.

Meanwhile, the building has been declared unsafe and power and water supply stopped for now.

"A complaint will be lodged on charges of criminal offence against the responsible society official. The building has been declared unsafe, and the power and water supplies have been stopped for now," he said.

Last year, 15 people were killed after fire broke out in a Mumbai restaurant.
