The victim’s relatives allege that the police did not arrest the Congress leader’s aides who tried to settle the case by trying to bribe them
Wayanad: The family of a 17-year-old girl from Wayanad who was allegedly raped by veteran a Congress leader have accused the police of not investigating the case.
A case under sections of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against Congress leader and District Congress Committee (DCC) member OM George. He is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, belonging to the Adivasi group.
The victim's relatives also allege that the police didn't show any interest in arresting the aides who tried to settle the case by way of bribe. Furthermore, they allege that the police haven not bothered to question the victim.
The victim’s mother told media that she is planning to go on a hunger strike in front of the police station to protest the ‘inaction and disinterest of the police in her daughter’s assault case.’
The rape came to light when the (victim) tried to commit suicide. Childline activists ensured that the victim was protected and informed the police immediately.
According to the complaint filed with the police, George had sexually assaulted the 17-year-old Adivasi girl several times for over two years. It is also reported that the girl and her parents worked as servants at George’s house.
At present, George is absconding.
DCC president of the Sulthan Bathery constituency, said strict action would be taken against George if he is found guilty.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran has said to the media that George has been suspended from the party.
In a similar case, the CPI(M) state committee suspended MLA PK Sasi from the party following a sexual abuse complaint lodged against him by a woman leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). The decision was taken in the state committee meeting on November 26.
