A report suggests that the CRPF convoy halted for apparently no rhyme or reason at a place where the militants were waiting to launch their attack
Imphal: In a grenade attack this evening in Imphal that appears pre-planned, prima facie, a CRPF jawan got killed while another has sustained grievous injuries.
The dead jawan has been identified as Umesh M who worked as a hawaldar of 86 battalion of CRPF whereas Ramarajan, who is employed with 109 Battalion, has sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The incident reportedly happened when a CRPF convoy, while returning from the Chilchil training camp in Kangpokpi district, halted at the Phougeisangbam junction of Nagamapal area and came under grenade attack.
The attack took place at 5.45 PM on Saturday. The attackers have not been identified so far. Sources say the miscreants hurled hand grenades inside the vehicle that the security forces were travelling in. Umesh died on the spot while Ramarajan is being treated in a hospital for his injuries.
What is unsettling about the whole incident is the report of the CRPF vehicle halting at a place where the terrorists seem to be waiting to launch an attack.
A source suggested this was not merely an intelligence failure. The inquiry instituted will examine a possible insider hand.
