It is believed that the attack was carried out by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Union Minister Babul Supriyo alleged that the attack was orchestrated by “TMC-sheltered sand mafia Saiful”.

Supriyo, in a press conference held on Monday, said, "Asansol has been the victim of mafias. And there is a nexus between them and TMC leaders. Ghosh was killed by one of such sand mafia. The name of a TMC leader has emerged in the murder. But even as I speak, he is not arrested. No SIT, no investigation. The state is in shambles and she is polishing her prime ministerial illusions here in Delhi".

However, TMC has denied any involvement.

Details of the attack

While the deceased was identified as Sandip Ghosh — a booth level president of BJP — the injured was recognised as Jaidip Banerjee — a party worker. Currently, Banerjee is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Durgapur.

Both the BJP members were returning home after attending a meeting when the unidentified goons attacked them.
