Hyderabad: The liquor shops in Telangana and in the border of neighbouring states, located within five km will be closed for 48 hours before the voters head to the polling booth, which is scheduled on December 7.
On Friday, the officials of Telangana said that an inter-state meeting was held with excise officials of all the bordering states, which included Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Telangana principal secretary (excise) Somesh Kumar addressed the reporters, after the meeting, and said, "The habitual offenders on the borders have been identified, and it was agreed to ensure that they would be arrested or bound over as per the case. Dry days will be maintained for 48 hours before the close of polls on December 7."
The Election Commission (EC) earlier said that it seized a total of 3,19,335.732 litres liquor that was unaccounted and worth Rs 6.66 crore in the market. The police department has seized about 20,677.407 litres of alcohol worth Rs 71 lakh while the Excise Department seized 2,98,678.325 litres of liquor worth Rs 5.95 crore.
Telangana's Chief Electoral Officer Raja Kumar told the media that the complaints on the use of money and liquor in the state would be taken seriously.
Nonetheless, the EC has launched a mobile application as a pilot project and dubbed it 'C-Vigil', which is available on Google Play store. The EC said that the app would also allow citizens to report any malpractices they witness.
While voting will be held on December 7, the counting will take place on December 11.
