Kodava Samaja, an organisation in Bengaluru, has been working for Kodagu flood relief. Members of this organisation complained to the city police that a fake flood relief bank account in its name had been created to loot people. Central crime branch and the Cubbon Park police have arrested a man from Mandya, Karnataka, in connection with this case. Vijay Sharma alias Vijay Babu, a resident of Channarayapatna in Hassan, was arrested from Mandya on Thursday.
Talking to MyNation, Kodava Samaja member Roshan Somanna said, "The fake account was created to bring ill-repute to the Samaja's activities. However, neither has this act helped him nor has it reflected badly on us. I am thankful to the authorities who took swift action and also the volunteers and youngsters, who worked day-in and day-out, helping the authorities nab the culprit."
The bank account numbers were doing the rounds on social media. That is when the Samaja members realised that money was being collected in their name. Vijay Sharma had also posted messages on Facebook with details of the fake bank account, asking people to donate towards Kodagu flood relief.
Bengaluru police found that Vijay had already withdrawn Rs 60,000 from the account leaving Rs 200 behind.
Kodava Samaja has requested to credit donations to Kodava Samaja Flood Relief Fund Bengaluru, A/c No: 1370101084312, IFSC Code: CNRB0001370 at Canara Bank, Vasanth Nagar.
