Kerala rains claim 39 lives, Rs 113.19 cr relief package announced

So far, over 86,598 people have already taken shelter in relief camps across the state. At least 569 relief camps have been opened. The state government of Kerala has sanctioned Rs 113.19 crore to take up relief operations in the rain-affected areas.

Two more persons died in a rain-related incident in Kerala today (20 July), taking the death toll due to monsoon fury to 39.

On Friday (20 July), two people were killed due to heavy rains in Thrissur. The duo identified as Ayyappan (70) and his son Rajan (45) died after their house collapsed.

Though there was some relief from rain in some parts of the state, waterlogging in low-lying areas has thrown normal life out of gear.

The state government has sanctioned Rs 113.19 crore to take up relief operations in the rain-affected areas.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to send a central team to visit the state to evaluate the damage caused due to rains.

There were reports stating that Rajnath Singh will send union minister Kiren Rijiju to monitor the situation in Kerala.

194 relief camps have opened in Alappuzha where 11,090 families are sheltered.  In Kottayam, there are 156 camps where 7,856 families are housed.

Railways have maintained strict surveillance on seven bridges between Kayamkulam and Ernakulam due to the overflow of Pamba river in Pathanamthitta and Meenachil river in Kottayam. The water level in the Pamba river has been rising since 18 July.

Train services which were interrupted due to heavy rains resumed with speed limits at specific locations.
