Kerala likely to witness heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours, says Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)
Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today predicted that certain districts in Kerala are likely to witness heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur are in the red alert zone.
A yellow alert has been issued in Kollam and Kasaragod, whereas Thiruvananthapuram is the only district with the green alert.
The red alert warns of heavy rainfall, while yellow denotes heavy rainfall at isolated places. A green alert is for light to moderate rain.
More than 344 people have been killed in the floods and rain-related incidents in Kerala in the past three days. Close to four lakh people have been shifted to more than 2,500 relief camps across the State.
Heavy rains accompanied by gusty wind with speed reaching up to 60 kmph are likely to hit Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sought an emergency aid of Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre saying that the State suffered losses of Rs 25,000 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier announced an interim relief of Rs 500 crore for Kerala. He also held a high-level meeting with Vijayan and other ministers to discuss the flood situation.
