Bengaluru: Belagavi is in the limelight due to the political developments in the State, thanks to the Jarkiholi brothers who are proving dangerous to the Congress-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka. The name of Belagavi in northern Karnataka is often recalled as a neglected region of the State. It is making news again apparently because Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has hit upon a plan for the district.
Kumaraswamy is visiting Belagavi tomorrow to hold an important meeting to discuss the Mahadayi issue and division of Belagavi into three districts to ensure better administration.
Some reports in the media suggested recently that Belagavi would be divided into Belagavi, Chikkodi and Gokak districts. It is being said that the division would diffuse the power centred around the Jarkiholi brothers and, in turn, help the alliance government.
However, the division also means additional expenses and political implications. Though it can help develop the region better, Kumaraswamy will take a decision only after a discussion with political and economic experts.
Karnataka BJP is against the division of Belagavi. It is crying foul, claiming that the decision to divide the district is aimed at benefiting the Congress-JD(S) alliance in the State.
