Belagavi: M Monisha has become the first transgender to get a full-time employment in the Karnataka secretariat. She has been appointed as the group-D employee in the secretariat.

Monisha, from Belagavi is the first person from the LGBT community to attain this feat.

She will commence work in the Belagavi winter session to be held at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi from December 10 to December 20.

Basavaraj Horatti, Karnataka legislative council chairman has issued a notice in this regard and specified that Monisha will join as group-D employee and will work at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

New Baiyappanahalli resident Monisha has studied till class 7 and had applied for the post of driver in 2016. The legislative council had called for applications to eight vacant posts of driver, but Monisha's application was rejected by the council. However, it appointed seven people and kept one seat as vacant.

Following the rejection, Monisha filed a writ petition to the high court stating that the respective organisations failed in implementing Supreme Court's order on minorities reservation. Hearing her plea, Justice L Narayanaswamy issued an interim order and ruled that the class-7 pass Monisha was eligible for the group-D post.

After this order, the secretariat did not file an objection and decided to go ahead with the court's verdict and subsequently appointed Monisha as a full-time employee in the secretariat, TOI reported.
