Guwahati: A first year BTech student of IIT-Guwahati had allegedly committed suicide in the higher educational institution hostel on Wednesday.

18-year-old Nagashree SC Aithal, hailing from Shimoga in Karnataka, hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her room of Dhansiri girls hostel. Aithal joined the institution in July this year.

The police recovered a suicide note from the student’s room, which said that she wanted to be a teacher and not an engineer.

IIT-G spokesperson Labanu Konwar said that one of the roommates of the deceased knocked at the doors after coming from class but no one opened.

“She immediately informed the security who, in turn, informed the IIT-Guwahati authorities and the local police. The police immediately rushed to the hostel and broke down the door only to find the student hanging from a ceiling fan,” the IIT-Guwahati PRO said.

The body has been sent to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem.
