The controversy surrounding Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s remark that his party was for Muslims refuses to subside, as Gandhi has chosen to prolong the debate with his defensive tweets.
After the BJP raised a din over the remark, the Congress had dismissed it as a rumour. However, Shakeel Shamsi, the editor of Urdu daily Inquilab, stood by the report in his newspaper.
Backing reporter Mumtaz Alam Rizvi who published Rahul’s statement, the editor said, “Rahul (Gandhi) said Congress is a party of Muslims, because Muslims are weakened and have become another version of Dalits in the country.”
On 17 July, Congress president Rahul Gandhi broke his silence over the controversy, tweeting, "I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and the persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me."
"I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear. I love all living beings. I am the Congress," he added.
I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and the persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me.
I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear.
I love all living beings.
I am the Congress.
However, according to reports, Gandhi had met with Muslim intellectuals earlier last week and had told them that the Congress was a party for Muslims.
Twitterati has divided into two teams, while some are appreciating his statement, some used the opportunity to remind him of his party's failures and took a dig at him. His supporters and Congress leaders started trending the hashtag #IAmCongress and others used the same to troll him.
I helped Warren Anderson, the killer of 16000 people escape India. I led the massacre of 8000 Sikhs. I imposed Emergency and trampled the basic rights of citizens.
