Haryana: Self-styled godman Rampal convicted of murder, quantum of punishment to be pronounced later

Hisar: Self-styled godman Rampal was found guilty by a Haryana court in two murder cases on Thursday.

Additional district and sessions judge, Hisar, DR Chaliya, held Rampal and 22 of his followers guilty in these cases for murder, criminal conspiracy and illegal confinement.

Rampal was convicted on the charges of murder in a 2006 case relating the death of a woman supporter during clashes between his followers and those of the Arya Samaj.

The godman was also convicted on the charges of murder in a 2014 case that dealt with the deaths of four women and a child during clashes between his followers and security personnel, who had come to the ashram to arrest Rampal for the 2006 murder case.

In both cases, Rampal was charged under section 302 (murder) and section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on October 16 and 17.

The Haryana police had held a flag march on Wednesday anticipating a violent reaction by Rampal's supporters after the verdict is delivered. According to an Economic Times report, trains to Hisar from other states had also been stopped.
