Gambhir is likely to replace Meenakshi Lekhi in the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency as the party heads are not happy with her work
New Delhi: If reports are to be believed, the BJP is in talks with cricketers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir, who are now expected to contest the upcoming the general elections 2019 from their respective states, Bihar and Jharkhand, on the party's tickets.
Gambhir is likely to replace Meenakshi Lekhi in the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency as the party heads are not happy with her work.
A senior BJP leader says Gambhir is a popular face among Delhiites and is also known for his social works among the people. The party believes that he will do better for the people of Delhi.
According to reports in a section of news media, both the cricketers will campaign for the BJP. Though not much is known about Dhoni’s call on this, it is believed that the saffron party is trying to convince him.
This is not the first time that cricketers have been approached to contest elections. In 2014, the Congress had fielded cricketer Mohammad Kaif from the Phulpur seat. However, he was defeated by a margin of 86,000 votes.
