Harikumar allegedly got into an altercation with an electrician named Sanal on the road on the night of November 5, following which Harikumar is reported to have pushed Sanal, who fell on the road and was crushed to death by a speeding vehicle.

The report submitted by the special branch of the Kerala Police mentioned serious lapses to have occurred on the part of the accused policeman. A case of murder was registered against the DSP under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Two other policemen — Sajesh Kumar and Shibu — were suspended for failing to take Sanal to the hospital at the appropriate time.

Reports suggest that emotional pressure drove Harikumar to take this extreme step. The DSP was expected to surrender to the police in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
