The floor on fire was inaccessible. Three cops from the police station of the area made their way to the spot through an adjacent building to reach the couple that was trapped in the fire
New Delhi: In the morning of August 22 at around 6 AM, when the staff of the police station and police post of the neighbourhood were mostly away ensuring law and order on the occasion of Eid festivities, a fire broke out at Paharganj.
The incident occurred at 3018, Gali No 1, Chuna Mandi, Paharganj, Delhi. The fire started from the first floor. Some people who were sleeping on other upper floors were trapped inside.
It was difficult for the police to go upstairs before the fire service reached the spot. However, Delhi Police personnel head constable Manoj Kumar and constables Sandeep and Amit from the police station of Paharganj reached the spot immediately on receipt of information from their sources.
Policeman Manoj and his colleagues broke open the lock of the adjacent building and went upstairs. They found that a couple was still trapped on the second floor of the premises and were crying for help. The police staff came to their rescue, first saving the life of the woman who was hanging precariously from the grill of the balcony and was about to fall.
The policemen, without caring for their lives, entered through the balcony of the second floor, made a human chain to reach the roof of the second floor. With cooperation, they saved the life of the woman and also her husband in a similar way. It was a daring and heroic act on the part of the policemen, which resulted in securing the couple.
It is learnt that a person had already jumped from one of the floors out of panic and injured himself. He has been taken to a hospital nearby for treatment.
