Cyclone Gaja hit land on November 16 and has caused massive destruction in districts of Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Dingdigul and Trichy in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu: The chief minister of Tamil Nadu Eddappadi K Palaniswami, on Sunday, released a statement regarding the effects of Cyclone Gaja, which stated that 45 people have been reported dead and severe damage and loss of property have occurred. The cyclone made its landfall on November 16 in Nagapattinam and has affected the districts of Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Dingdigul and Trichy.
Around 2.5 lakh people have been evacuated from the affected regions. The cyclone has uprooted close to 1.7 lakh trees all over the state and has also damaged crops, causing traffic and road damage, and inconvenience the livelihood of the farmers. 347 electricity transformers have been damaged and wires have been snapped in the cyclone. 12,532 Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials have been deployed to bring back power for the city.
Approximately 56,942 houses were completely destroyed. Money will be provided based on the loss of property that has occurred.
Relief sum of Rs 10 lakh will be given as compensation to the families of those who have died in the disaster, said the chief minister in his earlier announcement. The Tamil Nadu government is providing Rs 1 lakh to individuals, who have suffered from severe injuries during Gaja. Rs 25,000 will be compensated to those who have suffered minor injuries. Rs 30,000 has been allotted to the loss of cattle in the cyclone and Rs 3000 for goats lost.
372 medical camps and 1014 mobile medical units have been set up in the affected areas. Senior IAS officer Sunil Paliwal, Amudha and Radhakrishnan have been deputed to Pudukottai, Triruvarur and Nagapattinam districts to check on the camps set up there. 493 cyclone shelters have been placed across the state.
