Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who himself is known to be harbouring dreams of becoming the PM, says he is 'eager' for an anti-BJP alliance with the Congress in 'national interest'

New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal revealed on Thursday that his overtures of an alliance with the Congress for the Lok Sabha elections have been turned down by Rahul Gandhi.

The politics of forging a ‘mahagathbandhan’ or mega alliance of Opposition parties against Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to be progressively slipping into a quagmire. Personal differences seem to be bugging this motley congregation of political outfits and sectional interests preventing a possible deal for the 2019 elections.

The Delhi chief minister, his pride wounded, told reporters on Thursday, “Hamare man mein desh ko leke bahut jyada chinta hai... Usi wajah se hum lalayit hain. Unhone lagbhag mana kar diya hai." (We are extremely worried about the country which is why we are so eager for an alliance. They (Congress) have refused more or less.)

Kejriwal has been known to cherish the dream of becoming the Prime Minister.

The process mahagathbandhan is indeed turning out to be a tortuous one which is confusing even the voters. The Congress, after the meeting of Opposition leaders at Sharad Yadav’s residence in Delhi on Wednesday, indicated that it would go alone in Bengal and Delhi, but was open for a united front in the general elections.

Meanwhile, estranged Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas took potshots at Kejirwal. “My husband does not love me... My life is hell,” Kumar tweeted, quoting Kejriwal’s statement that the Congress had refused an alliance with him in Delhi.

In another tweet, Vishwas indicated, without naming Kejriwal, that the Delhi chief minister was “narcissistic”. He said that a “narcissistic midget is pleading the Congress to take him under its wing anyhow”.

Another former AAP leader and ex-minister in the Delhi government, Kapil Mishra, chided Kejriwal for attending the Opposition meeting at Sharad Pawar’s house.

The relation between the Congress and AAP has never been an easy one as Kejriwal had risen to power on the back of his anti-corruption movement against the Congress.
