Raipur: A 28-year-old research scholar from Raipur has discovered a drug-like molecule which has the potency of fighting cancer.

"Initially, we cannot term the molecule as a drug, instead it is a drug-like molecule," said the research scholar from Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Mamta Tripathi.

She added that the drug-like molecule, hydroxamic acid-metal complex, has been developed in such a way that it can kill a large number of cancerous cells in very minute concentration.

“Under the guidance of my guide professor Rama Pandey (retired Pt RSU professor and BSR faculty fellow, who is an expert in drug design), we have successfully carried out in-vitro study (studies carried out in laboratory) and started preparation to undertake in-vivo study which means study in small organisms like mice. In the next step, some bigger organisms will be selected for the study and eventually the clinical research work will be carried out on humans,” stated Tripathi while speaking to MyNation.

Tripathi has carried out her research in association with Durga Femto Technologies and Research Laboratory in Bangalore.

Speaking about the research, Tripathi highlighted that in 2001, the research scholars from RSU, in collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, started studies in 19 molecules and gets remarkable results in two cancer cell lines including breast cancer cell line and skin cancer cell line. The studies which were carried out in-vitro (studies carried out in laboratory) as well as in-vivo (study in mice) were paused later due to some reasons.

In 2013, RSU professor Pandey had assigned Tripathi along with her group to start work on this topic.
