Nearly 200 cars are said to have gone up in flames in a private car park in Porur, Chennai on Sunday afternoon.
There are no details of casualties yet. A spark from nearby burning garbage is believed to have spread to the cars. However, there is no confirmation on the source of the fire. A security guard noticed the fire and alerted the fire brigade who then rushed to the spot.
50 firemen were deployed in the fire-fighting operation. Fire personnel said that majority of the cars had mechanical faults and had been parked for over a year.
The cars were parked in an empty plot of land opposite Ramachandra hospital.
