During the Kargil battle 1999, Batra sustained injuries while saving his men from enemy fire and later succumbed to them. For his exemplary leadership and bravery, the officer was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously

Today is the birthday of one of the bravest heroes of the Kargil War. Captain Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the highest wartime gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra, for killing several enemies in the toughest operations at height of 14000 feet.

On June 20, 1999 Batra was tasked to attack and win back Point 5140, following which he, along with his men, launched a frontal assault on the enemy positions and the officer himself managed to kill four rivals.

Again on July 7, his team was tasked to recapture the Point 4875. Batra attacked the fortified bunkers and killed five enemy soldiers at point blank range. Due to his motivational leadership, the troops took over the post in one of the most fiercely fought battles during the war and managed to complete the mission.

However, during the battle, Batra sustained injuries while saving his men from enemy fire and later succumbed to them. For his exemplary leadership and bravery, the officer was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.
