BJP's women activists in Amethi receive 10,000 saris from Smriti Irani on the occasion of Diwali (Video)

Amethi: Just before Diwali, the women workers of the BJP in the Lok Sabha constituency of Amethi have received 10,000 saris from Union minister Smriti Irani. Responding to the criticism by the Congress that the saris are not meant for the ordinary citizens of Amethi, the party said there were indeed 12 lakh odd people in the constituency whereas the saris numbered only 10,000.

The party dismissed the allegation that this was a means to woo the electorate. It said that Irani had fought the Lok Sabha election from here in 2014 and that the minister had fond memories of the woman colleagues who toiled hard in the campaign, and that she had been in touch with these women ever since. "During Diwali, you send gifts to the near and dear ones, which is what Smriti ji has done," the spokesman said, adding that this isn't quite an election season.
