The Bihar government has asked all district magistrates to make surprise visits to homes for girls and urged people to keep their eyes open for any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.

Former deputy chief minister of Bihar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has pulled up Nitish Kumar’s government for allegedly shielding the culprits in the Muzaffarpur government shelter home rape and murder case.

Following a complaint from an inmate about murder of one girl and rape of at least 30 others in the state-funded shelter home, police have begun investigation and dug up the compound as it is believed that the body of the occupant was buried there.

Yadav took to Twitter to accuse the JDU government of a “flood of rape in Bihar”.

“Think? How would you feel if your family and the village’s seven to 17-year-old sisters or daughters, supported and sponsored devils, were raped her for months? There is a flood of rape in Bihar and the government is silent. They just care about their power!” he tweeted in Hindi.

According to reports, the girl was killed following a disagreement with the staff.

Doctors have also confirmed rape of 16 girls out of 21 reports of medical examination that were submitted.

Hindustan Times reported that the excavation is being supervised by executive magistrate (eastern) Priya Rani Gupta and senior police officials.

Most of the accused, including a few government officials, have been arrested and the shelter home has been shut down.

The cases of the sexual assaults came to light after a social audit of shelter homes running across Bihar by Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

The Bihar Social Welfare Department has also filed a police complaint based on the audit report.

Meanwhile, the Bihar government has asked all district magistrates to make surprise visits to homes for girls.

The administration has also asked people to keep their eyes open for any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.
