Bengaluru ATM attack: Man confesses to crime, pleads judge for punishment

Jyothi Uday, an employee of Corporation Bank in Bengaluru was attacked with a machete on November 19 in 2013 inside an ATM booth in NR Square. The accused, Madhukar Reddy, was arrested in Andhra Pradesh in February 2017.

Bengaluru: Madhukar Reddy, accused of attacking a woman inside an ATM in Bengaluru, five years ago, has at last confessed to his crime. He has requested the judge to punish him.

Currently, Reddy is in judicial custody and the police had presented him before 65th Sessions Court on Friday.

During the court session, Madhukar confessed that he was the one, who attacked Jyothi Uday. He reportedly said, "I am the attacker. There is no need of any interrogation. Punish me right now. No lawyer needs to argue on behalf of me. I have a wife and children. I must return home. Considering this, please punish me right now."

Reacting to this, the justice told Reddy that he is charged with a crime that might also result in sentencing him to life term. "Just because you confessed to the crime, there can't be any concession in the punishment to be awarded to you. Discuss with the police regarding appointing a lawyer for you," he said.

The next hearing has been fixed for January 7, 2019.

Madhukar Reddy was arrested at Madanapalli in Andhra Pradesh nearly three years after the incident that took place in February 2017.

He was arrested after 1,170-day-long hunt involving the police of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Jyothi Uday, an employee of Corporation Bank in Bengaluru was attacked with a machete on November 19 in 2013 inside an ATM on NR Square. She was attacked repeatedly. He snatched her debit card and fled after shutting the door of the ATM. Jyothi was lying in a pool of blood.

She had lost movement in her right leg and hand. A case in this regard was filed at SJ Park police station. The Karnataka government had even announced an award of Rs 10 lakh for those giving any details about the whereabouts of Madhukar Reddy.
