It seems like Dalit lives don’t matter in Didi’s Bengal.
Days after two Dalit students Rajesh Sarkar and Tapan Burban were killed in Islampur, Bengal by a policeman, the BJP has called a 12-hour Bengal bandh on Wednesday. Though the police have denied that they were students, it doesn’t take away the fact that the police used excessive brute force on innocent people who were simply demanding new teachers.
The bandh today has brought the entire of Islampur to a standstill, with at least four busses being burnt down and trains were stopped at many places. Kolkata saw multiple protest marches with senior leader Roopa Ganguly leading the march in Kolkata’s Hazra. BJP supporters were cracked upon by cops at many places with lathi charge, firing of tear gas shells and arrests. Mamata Banerjee has opposed the bandh from Europe, where she is touring right now and her government has reportedly issued circular refusing casual leaves for any government employee on the day of the bandh.
