Majuli: A teacher died due to lack of medical treatment in Assam’s river island district Majuli — the assembly constituency represented by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Due to poor road connectivity, no ambulance could make it to the area.
The teacher of a junior college hailing from Patharichuk area, along the Lakhimpur-Majuli district border, fell sick on Friday and family members were forced to carry him in a handcart to a government run hospital due to dilapidated conditions of roads.
The deceased, who was identified as Sushil Payeng, was taken to the Pitambar Deva Goswami civil hospital at Gormur, which is the only healthcare centre in Majuli, crossing two rivers and several kilometres of roads.
Unfortunately, even at the hospital he did not receive proper medical treatment due to unavailability of doctors and died shortly after.
“We are facing same problem since the Independence. The villagers are facing lots of problem in the bordering areas of Lakhimpur and Majuli district,” a relative of the teacher said.
Recently, a pregnant woman was carried by her family members in a handcart due to poor road condition.
