Anti-trafficking bill: Sold to sex slavery by 'brother', here's what this trafficking survivor has to say

New Delhi: Trafficked from Tenali district at the age of 18 and rescued by the police in Vijayawada when she was 25, MyNation spoke to a sex trafficking survivor at a recent consultation meeting organised by Prayas, an NGO founded by ex-Delhi DCP Amod Kanth.

Although an FIR was filed against her trafficker, she has received no justice to date. The proposed, Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, has already been cleared by the Lok Sabha and awaits a discussion in the Rajya Sabha. The bill, which may become law in 2019, provides confidentiality of victims, witnesses, time-bound trials and repatriation of the victims.

However, two United Nations experts said the bill leans too heavily on the criminal justice system and 'is not sufficiently complemented by a human rights-based and victim-centred approach'. Many have argued that the bill would colour those consensually involved in the sex trade as a criminal or a victim.
