Muthanna was in an inebriated state most days. He also ran a hotel and wanted to make a lot of money. But one of his visits to Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, where he saw many people dressed like Gandhi affected him badly. Slowly this man from Karkikatte village in Rona, Gadag district in Karnataka started thinking big. Taking cue from Mahatma Gandhi's words, "If you want change, start from yourself," Muthanna first tried to appear like Gandhi and soon he was a changed man from the inside too. He said no to alcohol, and also decided to quit hotel business. He has transformed the building into an ashram. He dresses up, paints himself like Gandhi and goes to schools, various places and teaches Gandhian thoughts. I have walked for 35 km to save environment. Muthanna has also taken part in protest against encroaching Kappathagudda. He dressed up like Gandhi and stood at the place, silent for five hours in protest of the move to destroy Kappathagudda. A film on him was made by Maya Chandra. The film was made as a part of a series called Manava meaning human. The aim of the series is to bring back a sense of compassion and humanity.
