In an unfortunate turn of events at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at Medinipur in Bengal, a portion of the tent, adjacent to the podium from which he was addressing the crowd, collapsed in the middle of his speech injuring at least 15 people.
The prime minister immediately stopped his speech and instructed his Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel to help the injured.
Initial reports suggested that most of the injured were ordinary BJP workers. A local source also told MyNation that some of them even lost consciousness.
The injured people were rushed to the nearby hospital.
Soon after the rally, Modi went straight to the hospital to meet the victims and he was seen talking and consoling them.
However, Congress was quick to give this tragedy a political colour. Speaking to reporters at New Delhi, Congress’s media department chief Randeep Singh Surjewala claimed, “Even as people were crying in agony, Modi continued speaking.”
BJP reverted by questioning Rahul Gandhi's silence on the matter.
During the speech, the Prime Minister attacked the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in Bengal over its deep rooted corruption in form of Syndicates and prevailing atmosphere of political violence.
The incident brings back the memory of Modi’s Patna rally during 2014 General election, where he calmed people and prevented a stampede in spite of bomb blasts that rocked his rally.
