Representatives of 114 firms across the country today participated in a pre-application conference organised by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre here as part of the technology transfer of Lithium-ion battery technology to Indian industry.

The technology was developed at VSSC, the lead centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) here.

ISRO had floated the Request for Qualification (RFQ) in connection with the technology transfer in early June.

"Of the the 140 plus companies who purchased the RFQ, representatives of 114 firms participated in the event," a VSSC press release said.

VSSC Director S Somanath inaugurated the conference, in which a number of senior officials, including its Associate Director T Mookiah and Deputy Directors, S C Sharma and C R Thomas took part.

In his address, Somanath said the Lithium-ion battery technology is going to revolutionise the power storage sector.

"ISRO has been working in this area for long on various generations of batteries with a strong research and development background," he said.

With the successful deployment of batteries in multiple missions of PSLV and satellites, ISRO was confident of transferring this matured technology to the Indian industry with the whole hearted support and backing from the government, he said.

As part of the familiarisation process, a documentary on ISRO Lithium-Ion batteries was screened, followed by a live question answer session with the participants.

A visit to the VSSC Battery Facility in the campus was also held.

The pre-application conference was organised to highlight various aspects of the technology transfer process and guide the prospective industries to come up with proposals, the release added.
