American singer and dancer Lance Bass has disclosed that he has recently been diagnosed with Type 1.5 diabetes, after years of being misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He shared that despite adhering to a strict diet, medication, and exercise routine, he struggled to manage his glucose levels. The situation worsened until the accurate diagnosis revealed that he had been receiving incorrect treatment for Type 1.5 diabetes.

LADA, or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, is a condition that has symptoms and characteristics of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. According to medical experts, LADA is diagnosed in adulthood and progresses gradually, similar to type 2 diabetes. However, unlike type 2 diabetes, LADA is an autoimmune disorder that cannot be reversed through diet and lifestyle changes.
Symptoms
Experts explain that the initial symptoms and signs of Type 1.5 diabetes can be quite vague, but may include:
• Persistent thirst
• Frequent urination, including at night
• Unexplained weight loss
• Blurry vision and tingling in the nerves
Treatment
Doctors explain that Type 1.5 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce sufficient insulin. Since its onset is gradual, oral medications for type 2 diabetes may be effective initially. However, people with LADA will often require insulin within five years of diagnosis. Insulin treatment is generally the preferred approach for Type 1.5 diabetes, and the dosage may need to be adjusted daily.
