What is stomach cancer?

In stomach cancer, cells begin forming in various areas of the stomach. These cells can develop at the gastroesophageal junction, where the stomach and oesophagus converge. Stomach cancer can start developing in any section of the stomach. Approximately, 95 percent of stomach cancers originate in the stomach lining.

Symptoms

The early symptoms of stomach cancer may not be readily apparent. Some early symptoms could include weight loss or mild stomach discomfort. As the cancer progresses to the advanced stages, following symptoms may manifest:

•    Loss of appetite
•    Fatigue
•    Weakness
•    Vomiting
•    Heartburn
•    Difficulty digesting food
•    Recurrent stomach pain
•    Feeling full after consuming small amounts of food

Causes

When genetic mutations occur in the DNA of stomach cells, it triggers their abnormal growth. Factors such as family history, dietary habits, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, and direct exposure to metals or coal may contribute to the disease. If medical assistance is sought in the early stages of the cancer,  it can be easily cured through proper treatment.
