Maha Shivratri 2024: Significance of Ghrishneswar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva

Ghrishneshwar is an ancient Jyotirlinga that dates back thousands of years. The temple was reconstructed by Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. This place holds significance for devotees as they believe that worshipping this sacred site brings happiness and prosperity.

Approximately 11 kilometres away from Daulatabad, in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, one of the most prominent Jyotirlingas is situated in Verul village. Ghrishneshwar is an ancient Jyotirlinga that dates back thousands of years. The temple was reconstructed by Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. The architecture

Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple attracts thousands of devotees every year. It has three gates. The temple boasts a grand assembly hall, supported by stone pillars adorned with intricate carvings. It showcases remarkable architectural feat. In the assembly hall stands the statue of Nandi. Next to the temple is  Shivalaya, a sacred lake believed to grant the wishes of all. 

The belief

Worshippers believe that childless couples visiting the temple and praying here, are blessed with a child. This belief draws thousands of devotees to the temple daily. The nearby Shivalaya lake holds special significance, as it is believed to be the same lake where Ghushma used the immerse to mortal remains of the Shivalinga every day. 

Daulatabad Fort and Ellora Caves

Daulatabad Fort is situated just 8 kilometres away from Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple. This fort is a symbol of valour and bravery of the Marathas. Within the fort lies a Shivalinga named Dhareshwar and the Samadhi of Shri Eknathhji’s Guru, Shri Janardan Maharaj ji. Close to the fort, the world-famous Ellora Caves are situated. These caves are renowned for their construction by carving into the mountainside.

The nearest airport and railway station to Daulatabad are in Aurangabad. The city is well-connected to other major cities by road routes. Visitors can easily reach Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple by private taxi or car.
