How to prevent heat-related illnesses during Indian summers: Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health recently posted on X, providing information about the precautions that can be taken to avoid heat-related illnesses during Indian summers. 

Indian summers are brutal, and it is essential to take proper measures to ensure protection against the harsh sun and heat waves. Many regions in India experience high temperatures and humidity during the summer season, making everyday tasks daunting and sometimes impossible. It is important to take care of your body and avoid overexertion during this time. 

Individuals like children, elders, and the ailing cannot regulate their body temperatures which can lead to a heat stroke. Every year thousands of people die in India due to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The Ministry of Health recently posted tips to 'beat the heat' and avoid heat-related illnesses on X (formerly Twitter).

 

Stay cool, stay safe, and beat those scorching rays with these essential tips. Remember, a little precaution goes a long way in keeping heat-related illnesses at bay.

Following are some ways to protect yourself against heat-related illnesses:

1. Avoid going out in direct sunlight 

Try to stay indoors, especially during the hot hours of the day which are usually 10 am to 4 pm. If you have to be out make sure you're under a shade or using an umbrella to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. 

2. Stay hydrated 

Make sure you drink plenty of water and replenish your body with water every few minutes to avoid dehydration. A dehydrated body is prone to heat-related illnesses and can be fatal. 

3. Don't leave children or pets inside vehicles 

It can be extremely dangerous as it can cause suffocation and heat stroke due to the rising temperature inside the vehicle. Make sure the ventilation is proper and water is around to avoid dehydration. 

4. Avoid strenuous activities during the day

Try to plan physically intense activities for the evening or early morning to avoid the harsh sun in the daytime. If you need to do them, make sure you take proper breaks, have cooling towels, and drink plenty of water to avoid heat exhaustion. 

5. Do not go out barefoot 

Wear proper footwear before going out in the summer as surfaces like asphalt and concrete become extremely hot and can cause damage to the feet and lead to other heat-related illnesses.
